Feed My Starving Children

The last few weeks I have really been thinking about just how fragile and precious life is. A couple of weeks ago my daughter’s friend was killed in a car accident while driving back to college. This past Monday a friend of mine collapsed at the gym from a brain aneurysm and died the next evening leaving behind three small, beautiful children and a husband that absolutely adored her.

We never know when our time to leave this earth will be and it has made me ponder how important it is to give back and bring your sunshine to others who are being shadowed with darkness. That is what my friend, Dicy did and how she lived her life. That is how we can honor our loved ones that have died, to live our lives to the fullest finding ways to lift others up and lend our helping hands and love out into this world in which we live.

Monday night my friend’s daughter invited some friends of hers, my kids and me to do some community service for an amazing non-profit Christian organization, Feed My Starving Children.

This experience left me contemplating how fortunate and blessed we are to live in a country where food and water is a necessity met pretty easily every day. Yet, around the world there are people literally starving and are malnourished. How can this be in our day and time? Can we really end world hunger?

That is Feed My Starving Children’s mission, to end world hunger. It was started in 1987 and has shipped 1,973,965,048 meals to date. There were 1,098,094 volunteers last year.

The night we went they said our group of volunteers packed 150 boxes of meals to feed 92 children for a year in Swaziland. Wow! That felt good knowing how many children we helped there and that we were literally helping save lives. It makes an impact seeing the videos of these children and then knowing how only 2 hours of your time can make such a huge difference for so many.

They ship to more than 70 countries and they tell you what country will receive the meals you packed during your volunteer time. When they’re all boxed up everyone cleans the stations and then volunteers pray over the boxes for those who will receive these meals filled with vitamins and minerals, which puts smiles on the most adorable little faces around the world.
